Small Business Saturday, 2018
Nov. 24, 2018 is Small Business Saturday, an opportunity to support small, local establishments. With beautiful, clear skies and temperatures in the 40s, shoppers are out early, and some stores are offering special deals.
The U.S. Business Administration encourages small businesses to go to its web site to find creative ways each year to make the most of Small Business Saturday by tying the day to an event that will draw a crowd. The Town of Newton and the Greater Newton Chamber of Commerce last year did exactly that by hosting Wizard Con on Small Business Saturday. That means that the town is turned into a magical place to shop as Newton's small businesses bring Harry Potter's Diagon Alley to life with costumes, music, magical wands and more.
This time Newton is hosting Wizard Con with the help of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northern New Jersey to best handle a large turn out, as the event was a huge hit last year with its unexpectedly large crowds. This year they're even more ready to welcome shoppers for some magical fun after brainstorming how to control the amount of visitors, and how to best handle such a large crowd.
Whether in Newton, Andover, Byram or Sparta, local stores are hoping for a large turn out of shoppers today. Having gotten an early start shopping in Sparta, two families who were shopping together, headed home with their purchases - four throw pillows, and a brown bag from Sparta Books - while emphasizing that they have realized often that one can go to a large mall, only to realize that needed item may have been right around the corner all along: "Shop local...you can always find what you need."
