OGDENSBURG — Pedestrians greatly outnumbered motorists on Main Street through Ogdensburg Saturday morning as 270 runners supported the Ogdensburg First Aid Squad in the annual Oberg 5K. After traveling gently downhill, the runners made a big loop, past the mine, only to face their greatest challenge — the hill up Passaic Avenue.

“The last hill was hard,” said women’s overall winner Catherine Stone-Borkowski of Hamburg. “The hill is unforgiving. My two-mile time was really great.” She fell behind her anticipated pace during the third mile of the course. Her daughter, Talia Jean Borkowski, 11, described the course as “fun, but the last mile was really hard.”

The Ogdensburg Fire Department set up two spray stations, one on Plant Street and the other past the finish line, to cool any overheated runners.

Finishing first overall, Justin Scheid of Sparta was happy to see the first spray station. “It was super hot after the second mile.” After travelling downhill for two miles Scheid said, “the hill is always there.”

The elevation change was just as unkind to the older runners as it was to the youngest. “The course was great,” said Bob Nicholson, 84, of Sparta. “Over the first two miles I was ahead of my goal. The last mile, uphill, I lost the extra time and finished three minutes behind my goal.”

Finishing times were posted soon after the race and medals were awarded in 17 different categories.

“This is a very smooth running event,” said Michael Blahut, event chairman.

Among the winners in the Ogdensburg 5k were several Newton residents including Nicholas Boyle, Katie Boger, Sarah Calderon, Hannah Calderon and Joseph Farinella.
