To a certain extent, this is true….but not ALL incandescent lamps (light bulbs). As a result of the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 signed by former Pres. George W. Bush, efficiency standards were set by Law to require the phase out of certain standard light bulbs including some of the popular household “A-type” incandescent lamps that we all have used for over 100 years. Early in 2012 and 2013 we saw the phase out of the 100Watt and 75Watt incandescent lamp. Effective Jan. 1, 2014 the 40Watt and 60Watt (most popular) incandescent light bulb is also now banned from manufacture and/or import. Many other incandescent types such as 3-ways are not affected.

Resellers can still sell these products until supplies run out meaning consumers will see dwindling inventories. For many years, Lamp manufacturers have been striving to improve the energy efficiency of light sources as we have seen with innovations such as halogen, compact fluorescent, and other reduced wattage products geared to cut energy costs and energy consumption. LEDs are now fast becoming your best choice for maximum energy efficiency and long life.

The right thing to do as a result of this legislation is to educate yourself regarding alternatives. Today, LED lamps are available to replace most standard inefficient light sources for many applications in the home or business. From table lamps to down lights to outdoor flood lights, linear tubes, etc…..LEDs are a great choice and prices continue to drop. The benefits of LEDs far outweigh the higher initial cost due to dramatic wattage reductions and extreme long life. Energy savings can reach 80% with LEDs and the quality of light is equal or even better.

All of us should be energy conscious as we strive to reduce energy consumption and do our part to promote a Greener environment. Let's not forget the nuisance of changing out those short life incandescent lamps. With LEDs, you get years and years of quality life.
