Stillwater teen wins 'Women in Tech' film award

Sadie Price-Elliott, a senior at Sussex County Technical High School, has won an international award for her documentary film, “GEMS: Girls Empowered by Math & Science”, at the annual Girls Impact The World Film Festival in Austin, Texas.
The film profiles high school senior Larissa Collins in her effort to inspire young girls to achieve in the traditionally male-dominated STEM fields through her GEMS summer program. “Larissa’s weeklong program introduced 27 elementary-aged girls to female role models and engaged them in complex math and science concepts through projects,” Price-Elliott said. “The program had a great influence on the local community and my film documents this impact.”
Of the more than 200 film submissions received from 42 countries, Price-Elliott’s film was selected as a finalist and won the best “Women In Tech” film award. With support from the Sussex County Technical School Board of Education, Price-Elliott was able to attend the Red Carpet and Award Ceremony on April 14, 2019 and accept the award.
In its seventh year, the Girls Impact The World Film Festival, presented by nonprofit organization Connecther, invites filmmakers to tell stories that raise awareness about issues facing women and girls worldwide and envision in film the possibilities for females globally while providing the young adult voice an outlet in a compelling medium.
Price-Elliott’s film has helped the GEMS program gain community recognition and obtain new support for an expanded program in the summer of 2019.
