BY GLYNNIS JONES

— On July 4th, clouds gave way to sunshine as local residents prepared for barbeque's, parades and firework displays.

Hurricane Arthur, the first of the season, may have caused rain delays for some of the celebrations across the area, but he couldn't dampen the spirit of Independence Day.

American Flags and other patriotic signs were prominently on display up and down neighborhood streets.

The Newton Town Pool remained closed on Friday, but honored the Salute To Heroes event on Saturday by allowing US military veterans and their families free admission.

Residents in at least two towns were also given a reminder about their neighbors who have served to protect freedom and independence. The township of Byram placed a lighted sign on Rt. 206 at Cranberry Lake last week to welcome home US Marine LCPL Tim Lyons, while the American Legion Post 278 in Stanhope and a residence one block away welcomed home US Army SPC Robert McGuire with signs of their own. Both men are returning home from Afghanistan.

Flags also waved throughout cemeteries, including St. Joseph's in Newton, marking the graves of fallen heroes.
