  • Stanhope School students who participated in the county Battle of the Books.

— On Friday, June 2, the Stanhope School students in grades 5, 6, and 7/8 competed in the Sussex County Battle of the Books competition held at Franklin Elementary School. School teams from all over the county competed in groups of 3-6 members in their knowledge of book trivia. To join, a school must host a team or club and form groups of students eager to read and compete. Once a team is formed, a list of 15 books is provided to the students to divide amongst themselves. During the year, each team member is responsible for becoming an “expert” on his or her book. Many times, the students end up reading all 15 books in addition to all their other books for school. Books range from genres like historical fiction, fantasy, and realistic fiction. Some of the books featured from this year’s list were Fever 1793 by Laurie Halse Anderson, Hush by Jacqueline Woodson, Becoming Naomi Leon by Pam Munoz Ryan, and Because of Mr. Terupt by Rob Buyea.

A total of five teams competed from Stanhope in the grades 5, 6, and 7/8 divisions. The Stanhope students placed first in the 5th grade competition and first in the 7/8th grade division. But the real award was not the plaques, it was knowing how much the students accomplished through joining a year-long club, not only reading but learning time management skills and how to collaborate ideas. As one grandmother said in the audience the day of the competition, “It’s not always about winning. I’m just so happy and proud my granddaughter Kayla has read so many books this year.”
