NEWTON — Summer is just around the corner and so is the start of Sussex County Community College’s (SCCC) annual free family concert series, “Thursdays on the Green”.  This summer’s concert series kicks off with a bang as SCCC teams up with the Town of Newton for the first show on June 29.

The “Garden State Cowgirl”, Nikki Briar, and her Sweet Briar Band, will take the stage for the first music event of the series, beginning an array of diverse music and fun for all ages for several weeks. Opening up for Briar is the band Due South.

Briar was named the East Coast’s hardest working female country artist in 2011, sliding herself into the hearts of fans, and she hasn't let up! She records and performs in Nashville, TN, and up and down the coast and has shown people that a Jersey Girl can rock the country music scene as good as any southern gal. She's appeared at all the major music venues, including The Stone Pony in Asbury Park, and often opens up for national country acts.

The summer concert series, held rain or shine, continues in July, with concerts on July 6, July 13, July 20, July 27, and August 3.

All performances are held on the Connor Green, or in the Lakeland Bank Pavilion at SCCC.  Gates open at 6 p.m. and concerts begin at 6:30 p.m.  Refreshments are available for purchase.  Attendees are encouraged to bring blankets and lawn chairs to enjoy the show.  Themes for each night include not only Country but Broadway, Jazz, Beatles, 70’s and 80’s Rock, and Folk. Among the acts scheduled are Fab Forward, Rock 'N Roll Time Machine, Florian Schantz Jazz Combo, and Molly Venter & Goodnight Moonshine. Also appearing there will be performers from Drama Greek Studios.

Drama Greek Studios, July 6: This Night of Broadway will feature group numbers as well as solo performances. The entire evening will be emceed with background information provided on each song selection in a style that harkens back to the days of Cousin Brucie.

Florian Schantz Jazz Combo July 13: The group formed, in 2012 by 9-year old Florian Schantz, has been Jazzing through the tristate area. Their success has brought them all the way to Germany. Fab Forward, July 20: Fab Forward is not your typical Beatles Tribute band; instead they pay tribute to the hits of Beatles’ members when they became solo artists. In 2016, they were the winners of the 2016 New York Metro Area Fest for Beatles Fans Battle of the Bands contest.

Rock 'n Roll Time Machine, July 27: Rock out to some 70’s and 80’s Rock when Rock n’ Roll Time Machine comes to SCCC. After recently debuting, Rock n’ Roll Time Machine is looking to make a big hit.

Molly Venter & Goodnight Moonshine, August 3: The SCCC Summer Concert Series will wrap up with folk band, Molly Venter & Goodnight Moonshine. A collaboration between Venter and her husband Eben Parisrer, Goodnight Moonshine has shown many signs of success. Venter’s voice has been featured on FOX Television and Apple Computers as well as Warner Brothers films.

The “Thursdays on the Green” concert series has been made available in part by the New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department of State, a partner of the National Endowment for the Arts, through the State/County Partnership Block Program, as administered by the Sussex County Arts and Heritage Council.

There is plenty of parking, including handicap parking. For more information on the “Thursdays on the Green” concert series, please visit, sussex.edu.
