NEWTON — Each year we lose thousands of people of all ages from drug overdose, globally. Some survivors suffer permanent injuries, causing devastation to their families and friends. In Sussex County alone, law enforcement administered the opioid overdose reversal medication, Narcan, 52 times in 2016. Those are 52 individual lives saved from possible overdose death by an opioid like heroin and prescription medication. On Thursday, August 24, 2017, The Center for Prevention and Counseling in Newton will be hosting a free Narcan training, open to all community members. Opioid overdose is preventable and knowing the facts about drugs and the signs and symptoms of overdoses can equip you with the ability to save a life. These trainings also help provide education and increase awareness of the issues surrounding substance use disorders while highlighting resources for recovery. Free Narcan kits will be distributed at this training and pre-registration is required. Please RSVP to Phyllis Minicuci by calling 973-625-1998 x 18 or email pminicuci@mcpik.org. The training will be at The Center, 65 Newton Sparta Rd, Newton, from 6-7:30pm on Thursday, August 24, 2017. This Opioid Overdose Prevention Program is made possible by funding received from the New Jersey Governor's Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse, New Jersey Department of Human Services, Division of Mental Health and Addiction Services and Morris County Prevention Is Key, INC.
