How can oral piercings affect your dental health?

Oral piercings, such as those on the tongue, lips, cheeks, or uvula (tissue that hands at the back of your throat), can interfere with chewing, swallowing, and / or speech. Additionally, other possibilities are:

• Infection. Your mouth is a warm, moist environment that is home to many bacteria, and can thus become a breeding ground for infection. If not treated properly and right away, an infection can become deadly. It can also cause swelling of the tongue and possibly block the airway. • Damage to gums, teeth, and fillings. In some cases, due to playing with the piercing, repeated clicking of the jewelry against teeth can cause cracked or scratched teeth. It can also damage fillings. • Nerve damage. Your tongue may temporarily feel numb after getting it pierced, but this can become permanent. This may affect your sense of taste • Excessive drooling

Get in touch with your physician or dentist if you already have a piercing and have signs of inflammation, pain, or a red-streak around the site of the piercing.
