— On Saturday, April 14th, The Rev It Up 5K/10K will be held at Station Park. Benefiting the Sparta PAL, the race is proud to be celebrating 20 years.

The event got its start as The Sparta Main Street 5K on May 2, 1998. Through various forms, venues and renditions, the race director, Andy Ball, has remained the same and has done what's necessary to keep the event going.

“It was originally held at Sparta Athletic Club as a wellness celebration inviting the community to run, walk or push strollers,” Ball said. “As manager of the club at the time, my goal was to benefit a different charity each year, connecting those that needed some extra public relations and fund raising.”

He added, “It gave us an opportunity to meet the neighbors so to speak. The event triggered interest and has inspired other runs such as the Turkey Trot, O-burg Mine run, College run, and Pass It Along runs, to name a few.”

Ball explained that several years ago, organizers changed the venue and the name.

“The Sparta PAL was interested in hosting with support from the Dermody family who helped inspire the PAL facility and new Train museum,” he said.

The venue change was a win-win as Ball had a new place to hold the races — touring through Station Park — and the Sparta PAL would benefit from the public relations and net proceeds.

“One of the things that makes the event unique is that runners have a choice of doing a 5K (3.1 miles) or a 10K (6.2 miles),” Ball said. “There will be overall and age group prizes for both races and walkers are also welcome.”

Runners and walkers can use the RaceJoy app, whereby people can track friends and family from afar, and there will be pictures available of each finisher.

“There will be a live band and music on the course," Ball said. "Villa Capri II will provide food for the pasta party the night before, and Stop and Shop will also provide food.”

Massage Envy will be on hand to tend to stiff muscles, and there will be a fitness and wellness expo as well a a chance to check out the new Train Museum.
