— The brutal heat and humidity didn’t deter golfers from taking part in the Andover Township Fire Department’s 25th Annual Golf Outing, held Wednesday August 29th at Farmstead Golf and County Club in Lafayette.

120 players, a record according to ex-Chief Bill Gallagher, took part in the event which included lunch, a full round of golf, dinner, and door prizes.

Deb Danielson, who has been on the department’s golf outing committee for twenty years, credits the continued success of the event on consistency.

“The committee has remained much the same for the entire 25 years,” she said, “and the staff at Farmstead is steady, too. We work with the same people, and we know what to expect. They really go above and beyond for us here.”

Danielson, who was putting the finishing touches on the prize table, said she prefers to work behind the scenes with the Farmstead staff and the fire department volunteers, rather than go out on the course.

Both Danielson and Gallagher said they couldn’t thank the event sponsors enough for their support.

“We really make our money off the things like the hole sponsors,” Danielson said, “And Mars donated a really terrific raffle prize.”

The basket, full of M&M racing memorabilia and candy, also included 4 passes to any NASCAR race of the winner’s choosing, and was valued at nearly $2000. The hole sponsors included familiar local businesses like Casa Bellisima and the Circle K, among others, and corporate sponsorship was lent by larger entities like ThorLabs and JCP&L. 1st Hope Bank, which recently financed the renovations at ATFD’s main firehouse, also sponsored the event.

Coming off the course, Long Pond School Principal Brian Fleming and ATPD Patrolman Mike Haggerty said the outing was a good time, despite the heat. Their sentiment was echoed by the other golfers. A player named Archie said, “It was a ton of fun, and it’s good to be out supporting the fire department. There was a little breeze which made it bearable.”

Temperatures had soared into the high 90’s on Wednesday afternoon, with a heat index over 100.

Another golfer, Joe, who is also a member of the fire department, said the outing was a good time like always. “But still, I’m no professional golfer, and I lost my sand wedge,” he said. He was hopeful someone would return it at dinner.

Chief Greg Martin, unable to attend due to work obligations, expressed his gratitude through a note in the program, which read, “I would like to thank all of you for joining us on the 25th anniversary of our golf outing. We appreciate your continued support through the years.”
