HAMPTON - In 2012, Karla Eksteen and her mother, Amanda Eksteen, painted an antique dresser in the distressed, old-fashioned style that they both loved. Then they had an epiphany.
“We looked at each other and said, 'this is fun, we should start a business,'” Amanda said.
So they did.
At first, the women worked out of their Lafayette home.
“I had my opinions and ideas about how to do things as well as my mom's so we had to learn to separate the mother-daughter relationship and act as partners when it came to the business,” Karla said.
After two years of working out of their den and selling mainly on Etsy's website, the Eksteens quickly realized that they needed their own store and warehouse. So they moved into and expanded their space in Hampton Mall. Now they are celebrating five years there. Behind the showroom, they have a warehouse, so stock is always plentiful.
“So many people walk in and say they had no idea that we were here,” said Amanda Eksteen. “Usually, also, people don't stop talking when they're here because they're getting ideas of things they can do in their own home.”
The Eksteens call them “raves” because they wander through the show room feeling inspired and raving about the displays.
“We have a curated selection of authentic, vintage finds that are very unique," Karla said. "We also go to peoples' homes and redo areas of it for them.”
Many customers come from Culver's Lake, and in one home, the ladies recently did a Shiplap style renovation. It's a type of wooden board that adds a trendy, rustic, farmhouse style. Vintage Hip Decor has customers in California and throughout the U.S. who order on-line. Shipping is free to the lower 48 states.
The mother-daughter team refers to itself as “The Dynamic Duo." The team thrives on turning living spaces into works of art. They have been inspired by shows such as the Nate Berkus Show where Miss Mustard Seed (of Miss Mustard Seed Milk Paint) and Shaunna West from Perfectly Imperfect emonstrated refinishing furniture with specialty paint.
The Eksteens travel to favorite spots in Massachusetts, Virginia and everywhere in between, and in the future plan to attend auctions.
Vintage Hip Decor offers classes on working with Miss Mustard Seed Milk Paint. An individual class is $99, and for groups of three or four it is $79 per person.
