Autism Awareness Walk-a-thon

HOPATCONG. Hopatcong students and teachers participate in the annual Autism Walk-a-thon on April 2.

On Tuesday, April 2, the students and staff of Durban Avenue participated in the annual Autism awareness walk-a-thon. Special Education teacher Ashley Miller originated the walk-a-thon four years ago, which Special Education teacher Audra Bauer continued this year at Durban Avenue. Students and staff walked two miles around Durban Avenue in order to celebrate World Autism Awareness Day. During the walk, students demonstrated support for embracing differences and had a great time walking, listening to music, and talking with their friends. At the conclusion of the walk, students were provided with water and popcorn thanks to HEPTO. The event even had some very special guests including several Hopatcong School administrators, Superintendent DiBenedetto, and Ms. Chelsea Pohl from Autism Speaks. Through the sale of t-shirts, which were worn during the event, as well as sponsorship of students for the walk, over $840.00 was donated to the New Jersey Chapter of Autism Speaks! Thanks to everyone for their support and for making this year’s event so successful!
