Piercings are a way of self-expression. However, piercings in your mouth can interfere with speaking, chewing or swallowing. Some other things to consider before getting a piercing are:
• Infection and swelling could occur, since the oral cavity is a moist environment and is home to many bacteria.
• Damage to gums, fillings, and teeth can occur, with the habit of playing or biting the piercing.
• Hypersensitivity to metals. An allergic reaction to metals could be formed at the site of the piercing.
• You could start excessively drooling, as it may increase salivation.
• Your piercing could cause dental difficulties when seeing the dentist, such as difficulty holding an x-ray sensor in your mouth, or blocking x-rays and thus creating an un-diagnostic image.
Be sure to keep your piercing clean and let your dentist know if you are considering getting one!
