All bundled up and somewhere special to go: Lake Mohawk German Christmas Market

| 07 Dec 2019 | 02:40

It was a beautiful weekend at Lake Mohawk in Sparta as the German Christmas Market opened for the 2019 season. Amid sunny skies, shoppers enjoyed a full array of unique wares from candles, to soaps, to hats, glassware, wood carvings, coo coo clocks, and handmade wooden ornaments from Germany.

At 2 p.m. on Saturday, the Boardwalk was still enjoyably crowded and not too overwhelming. Some of this year's new features included tables along the beach where attendees could sit lakeside while enjoying delicious foods such as bacon topped macaroni and cheese, bratwurst, beer, warm donuts, hot chocolate, gluehwein, hot apple cider, funnel cakes, or a number of other delectables.

The idea of the German-themed market was started in 2001 by a group of volunteers desiring to raise funds for local charities, while creating a unique event that is open to the public along the idyllic boardwalk of the Lake Mohawk Country Club. It's now recognized as the largest annual Christmas Market in New Jersey. It's also listed as one of the top 10 events in the State.

The German Christmas Market was held at 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday and on Sunday at 10 a.m. until 5 p.m.

The Lake Mohawk German Christmas Market Foundation, Inc. is comprised of hardworking volunteers who this year worked under condensed time constraints due to the storm, yet didn't skip a beat.
