Homemade cornbread cooked on the hearth, corn styx, smoked sausage soup and peach/berry cobbler were prepared at Sunset View Farm by volunteers from the Coursen House. They taught about 15 people how to cook on an open hearth in a Rumford fireplace with a beehive oven, using cast iron pots and skillets, and farm produce. The group was entranced as Una Lee Williams-Thoenig and Jane Butz taught them step-by-step how to cook the way it was done in the colonial days. Una Lee had the group laughing with her stories of old-time cooking.
Coursen House will hold its Living History Day Oct 19 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the corner of Rt 94 and Stillwater Rd. Free event. Donations accepted.
