On Thursday, Oct. 24, 2019, Durban Avenue School students participated in the school's biannual Beautification Day, with support of the Hopatcong Education Association. Every student planted at least one bulb after being given a mini fall gardening lesson by Jennifer Bisignani and Blair Harris.

Durban Avenue will be bursting with crocus, hyacinth, daffodil, iris, anemone, and puschkinia flowers in the spring. Next, each class planted a chrysanthemum of their own. The students were invited to tickle the roots of the mum prior to planting the mum in the soil.

Lastly, students explored various types of pumpkins, gourds and squash at the “Pumpkin Museum.” At the end of the week, each classroom received a pumpkin, gourd or squash along with a guide to keep in their classroom. All of the mums, pumpkins, gourds and squash were purchased at the Sussex County Strawberry Farm on Route 206 in Andover. The bulbs were purchased at Home Depot and Lowe’s.
