Lifeguard teams from throughout Sussex, Morris and Passiac counties are invited to a fun and spirited competition of lifesaving skills. The 6th Annual Sussex County Lifeguard Competition will be held at Lake Mohawk Country Club’s Beach 1 on Monday, Aug. 5. The Lake Mohawk Country Club, in cooperation with the Sussex County Aquatic Safety Coalition, will again host this year’s competition.
The competition is designed to bring Waterfront Lifeguards from the many aquatic facilities from the area to compete and demonstrate their lifeguard skills in events such as rescue tube relays, paddleboard relays, open water 500 swim and a team CPR scenario. Every two years, a new team event is added. This year will be a Paddle/Run/Swim/Kayak team event.
Over the years, Lifeguards from Lake Mohawk CC, White Meadow Lake, Green Pond, Lake Mohawk Pool, Lake Lenape, Paulinskill Lake and Mountain Creek competed. White Meadow Lake guards are the defending champs. The travelling trophy is passed on to the winning team until the next year.
Medals are awarded to each team member placing 1st, 2nd and 3rd and all participants receive Competition shirts.
The evening event includes a BBQ for the participants during the award ceremony.
“It really is a fun time and seeing all the guards get together and share stories and tips, ” said Rich Carlson, the event coordinator. Sponsors for this year’s event are Lake Mohawk Country Club, Tulpenhocken Water Co., Aquamentor as well as the Sussex County Aquatic Safety Coalition.
