Newton Varsity Robotics's Team 3142 Aperture marked Pi Day on March 14, with an exciting night in the STEM Lab at Newton High School. In order to celebrate the ‘M," (which stands for Math) in "STEM," Christine Hofman, who is the sister of Robotics Head Coach James Hofmann, purchased pies at Hayek's Market, which is located at 1 Mill St. in Newton.
Owner Dan Hayek greeted the coach and unraveled a large slip of paper printed with the digits of pi. After posing for photos, Coach Hofmann selected various fruit pies to serve up with a scoop of vanilla ice cream while team members who wore pink, rubber pi bracelets, enjoyed a relaxing evening with their mentors. The team - and Pi Day - have the numbers "3.14" in common. Team members said that number is so close to their team number, that it makes Pi Day an especially fun holilday for Team "3142 Aperture."
