Vernon bids farewell to its farmers market this season

The Vernon Township Farmers Market closed the farmers’ market season on Saturday with its 10th market, Vernon Township Mayor Howard Burrell announced at Monday’s Township Council meeting.

The markets were held every two weeks.

“It would be a gross understatement to label this season of our municipal famers’ market anything but a major success,” Burrell said.

Councilwoman Kelly Weller said even though the season is over, it has arranged to be part of the holiday market at Mountain Creek’s Cobblestone Village on Nov. 21. All the markets’ regular vendors are expected to be there, along with about 15-20 additional vendors.

Burrell said the market would not have been successful without the township’s volunteers.

“Everyone who volunteers there is amazing, and it was so unbelievably successful,” Weller said.

Weller also said the group couldn’t do the Toys for Tots train this year because of the Covid-19 pandemic, but it will do its own Toys for Tots event during at the holiday market.

According to Burrell, the market saw a steady stream of both Vernon residents and out-of-town visitors, who would stop by either before or after walking the Appalachian Trail.

“I am very much aware of the fact, that it is our town’s volunteers who do many of the things that make Vernon Township a good place to live and raise a family” Burrell said. “The kinds of things that these volunteers do, are the kinds of quality-of-life things that our town could never afford to do.”
