Newton United Soccer Club update

| 05 Jul 2019 | 05:03

It has been three years since Newton High School soccer coach Brian Martin, with the help of many volunteers from Andover, Green, and Newton, and Atlantic Highlands Travel Soccer combined to form Newton United Soccer Club.
Since then the club has become a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization and has expanded its offerings while giving local players a great soccer club. The club organizes soccer events and fundraisers including an annual raffle and attending an annual New York Red Bulls game. Local businesses can also sponsor or donate to teams.
The recreational portion of the club now offers a 7-week instructional program for players under 6 years of age. The program offers new players skill-oriented games and weekly small-sided scrimmages to learn and thrive in a fun environment. A professional trainer runs the program, which meets on Saturday mornings starting in early September. Once children have completed the instructional program they can move onto recreational teams. But participation in the program is not required to join a recreational team.
Recreational soccer is available for boys and girls between the ages of 7 and 15. Teams typically practice once per week and play eight games on Saturdays in the spring and fall. Anyone interested in the instructional program or recreational soccer should email Luke Sayner at lukesayner@yahoo.com.
The travel portion of the club has grown to include 175 players on 12 teams. The travel teams have enjoyed over a 65% winning percentage during their first three years. This spring season, 6 of the 12 teams finished in first place while three others finished second. The Club attributes the success to its focus on player development led by professional trainers and volunteer coaches. Travel teams practice twice per week and play 10 games in the spring and team games in the fall on Sundays. The travel program also offers a professional goalkeeper training at no additional cost. Teams also offer winter and summer training. Travel soccer is for boys and girls between the ages of 8 and 19 and is highly competitive.
Boys and girls interested in travel soccer should email Ron Rosa at alltradehomes@yahoo.com Its travel teams are actively seeking players of all ages right now so please reach out as registration for the fall season is approaching.
The hard work of many volunteers has led to positive results both at the recreation and travel level while keeping costs to a minimum. Newton United Soccer Club also offers parent involvement on many levels including coaching, assistant coaching, and many organizational roles.
