Sports wrap up

Last year's local high school graduates performed well this year in collegiate sports.

Sierra Dunn (Newton High School) is on the roster as a freshman second base/catcher for the College of Saint Elizabeth (Morristown, NJ) softball team this spring. Dunn played in 27 games and started in 25 of them for the College of Saint Elizabeth. She had a .361 batting average with 22 hits, including two doubles and 10 RBIs. She also scored 16 runs.

The Eagles had an overall record of 24-14 and they were 7-7 on their home field. In the North Eastern Athletic Conference they posted a record of 11-7. Dunn is listed as an Education major with a minor in Spanish.

Let’s take a glance at other local student athletes who competed in collegiate sports this past season. This is the first installation in the series:

Madyson Griswold (Lenape Valley High School) was a junior defender for the Drew University (Madison, NJ) women’s lacrosse team this year. Griswold played in eight games for Drew this past season.

The Rangers had an overall record of 16-5 with a record of 10-1 at home. In the Landmark Conference they posted a mark of 4-3. Drew advanced to the Landmark Conference Championship Tournament where they were defeated in the semifinals by Catholic University in a game played in Washington, D.C. From there, they advanced to the Eastern College Athletic Conference Division III Championship where they defeated Neumann and Marymount before losing to Cabrini in contests held in Madison, NJ.

April Serratelli, a graduate of Newton High School was a freshman utility player for the Drew University softball program this past season. Serratelli played in 10 games and started in one of them for Drew. She scored two runs this year.

The Rangers had 12 overall victories with six of them occurring on their home field. They had one victory in the Landmark Conference.

Joseph DeFeo (Newton High School) was a senior pitcher for the Fairleigh Dickinson University (Florham, NJ campus) baseball squad this spring. DeFeo had one pitching victory and five saves for FDU. He struck out 16 batters.

The Devils had 13 overall wins, three of which they earned on their home field. They had six victories in the Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom Division. DeFeo is listed as a Business Administration major.

Ryan Rigby (Kittatinny High School) is on the roster as a freshman who played attack for the Georgian Court University (Lakewood, NJ) men’s lacrosse program this year.

The Lions posted an overall record of 10-8 including a mark of 7-4 at home. In the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) they went 4-1. They topped Wilmington University in the CACC Championship Tournament semifinals before losing to Chestnut Hill College by one goal in the championship contest. The tournament was held in Lakewood.
