Newton man found with gunshot wound at police station

NEWTON. The man is suspected of shooting himself in the head with a 9mm handgun.

At approximately 1:22 p.m. on Friday, July 29, 2022, a Newton police officer was exiting the rear of the Newton Police Station, located at 39 Trinity Street, in Newton, and discovered an unconscious man lying on the ground, according to a department press release.

According to the report, officers initially thought the man had fallen and was suffering from a head injury and immediately attempted to render aid. However, in doing so, they discovered that the victim was suffering from what they suspect was a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. A 9mm handgun was located underneath the man, per the press release. The man was then taken to Morristown Medical Center.

While the man’s name has not been released, Newton PD did confirm that he is from Newton and 71 years old.

The investigation is being conducted by the Newton Police Department and the Sussex County Prosecutor’s Office. No foul play is suspected and there is no threat to the public.
