Charles A. Gerth of Newton, N.J., died Tuesday, May 4, 2021, at United Methodist Communities at Bristol Glen in Newton. He was 82.

Son of the late Charles J. and Edna (Bussey) Gerth, he was born in Englewood, N.J., on Aug. 17, 1938, and raised in Leonia, N.J.

Charles was a resident of Walpack, N.J., from 1973 to 1983, then lived in Wantage, N.J., from 1983 until moving to Newton in 2016. He worked for the Newton Board of Education as a Science Teacher at Newton High School, retiring in 1998 after 34 years of service. He also served as the director of the Thunder Mountain School from 1972 to 1983. A member of Christ episcopal church in Newton, Charles was also a member of the Flying Hawks of Milford, Pa.

Charles was predeceased by his sister, Jeune Lauer, in 2016.

He is survived by his wife, Elaine (Simms) Gerth; his sons, Charlie J. Gerth of Sandyston Township, N.J., and David A. Gerth of Frenchtown, N.J.; daughter, Lisa Yanecko of Wantage, N.J.; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Services were private and under the direction of the Smith-McCracken Funeral Home, Newton.
