John Joseph Marx, 78, of Sparta, New Jersey passed away January 27, 2019 while at his winter residence in Cape Canaveral, Florida after a long battle with cancer.
John was born June 29, 1940 in Jacksonville, Florida to Jack and Adelaide Marx and there he spent the first 28 years of his life. After finishing school and serving in the Air National Guard as a Second Lieutenant he was able to transfer his love of flying into a lifelong career with American Airlines. John moved north to work with American Airlines, and not long after that settled in Sparta where he stayed after retiring as a Captain from the company in 2000.
He enjoyed hunting and fishing, using many of the skills he learned as an Eagle Scout. Later in life he picked up the game of golf. One of his true passions and dedications was sailing and he could be found every summer out on Lake Mohawk. If he was not racing, he was teaching and helping to instill the knowledge and competitive nature he was known for in the next generation of sailors.
He was a member of the Lake Mohawk Yacht Club and Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in New Jersey.
John is survived by his daughters, Katherine Porter and Joanne Marx, grandchildren Grace and Ellaree Porter, niece Lisa Chason and nephew Shawn Marx, sister in law Elizabeth “Betty” Marx and son-in-law Scott Porter. He was predeceased by his parents and younger brother, Thomas “Tommy” Marx.
Funeral services were held in February. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Wounded Warrior Project in John’s name.
