“Hands Across the Sea” Concert in Honor of 250th Anniversary

On Sunday, Nov. 3 at 4 p.m., the Christ Church Newton Senior Choir presents a concert in recognition of the 250th Anniversary of the founding of the Christ Church Parish in Newton. The concert will be modeled after a British concert held each year at the Royal Albert Hall in London as part of the Henry Wood Promenade Concerts: “The Last Night of the Proms.”

The concert will feature soloists John Beasley, baritone, and Shannah Yerofeyev, soprano, and will be accompanied by organ and orchestra. Tickets are $20 and are available for purchase on the church website, www.christchurchnewton.org or from choir members.

The Newton concert will feature sacred and patriotic works from both Britain and the United States, including Handel’s Zadok the Priest; Vaughan Williams Five Mystical Songs; Wilhousky’s setting of the Battle Hymn of the Republic; Parry’s Jerusalem; and Arne’s Rule Britannia.

Christ Church Newton was founded as a parish by the Church of England in 1769. The parish survived the revolution and became part of the Episcopal Church in the United States, first as part of the Diocese of New Jersey and later as a member of the Diocese of Newark. The “Hands Across the Sea” concert is one of a series of events taking place in November 2019 in recognition of the anniversary. The celebration kicks off with a reenactment of the historic arrival of the Reverend Dr. Thomas Chandler at the Sussex County Court House at 9 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 3. Other events include an Evensong celebration at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 23, at which The Right Reverend Dr. Alan Wilson, Bishop of Buckingham (England) will preside, and a celebratory Gala at the Lake Mohawk Country Club on Sunday, at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 24.
