NEWTON — The Sussex County Department of Human Services, Division of Senior Services, is offering the “A Matter of Balance” program at several locations throughout the county.
“A Matter of Balance” is designed to reduce the fear of falling and increase activity levels among older adults.
The program is based on studies showing that fear of falling can be just as dangerous as falling itself. People who develop this fear often limit their activities, which can result in severe physical weakness, making the risk of falling even greater.
The program consists of eight weekly sessions facilitated by pairs of trained volunteer coaches who will help participants learn to view falls as controllable and set realistic goals for increasing their activity level. Coaches will also show participants how to change their home environment to reduce risk factors for falls, as well as demonstrating simple exercises to help seniors increase strength and balance.
