A Day in Sussex County History' is Saturday's theme at SCCC
Newton - Lectures, exhibits and free flags for children are some of the attractions of the 10th Annual “A Day in Sussex County History,” to be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 5, at Sussex County Community College. The day will feature displays by historical societies from around the region plus a model train exhibit and antique engines.The festivities are free and open to the public and will take place rain or shine. Free flags, donated by Nellie Stires-Howell, will be given to the first 100 children under 12 years of age. Stires-Howell, treasurer of the Sussex County Historical Society said she anticipates this year’s event to be even better than last year. “We just want everyone to come out and enjoy the day. A Day in Sussex County History’ is such a great way to teach children about the county so they might continue to share their knowledge about Sussex County.” Lectures scheduled to be held in the Sussex Bank Theater at SCCC include: Ann Bain: “Life on a Sussex County Farm,” Jeff Chandler: “15th NJ Infantry,” Tom Jones: Sponsored by the Stillwater Historical Society - The History of Stillwater, Bill Truran: The Franklin Mines Teachers are eligible for three professional development hours during “A Day in Sussex County History” from 9 a.m. to noon. The program is specially designed forfourth and fifth grade teachers with the history of Sussex County as part of their curriculum. All teachers are welcome. Teachers will earn three hours in history education towards the state Department of Eeducation professional development requirement. There is a $10 registration fee. The program includes: Meet with local historical societies Learn more about Sussex County’s role in history Participate in on-site historical presentations Food available for purchase Certificate of participation awarded at noon Bonus: Museum will be open for teachers from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. Continental breakfast voucher available only at the museum and only for those who come to the museum. The Sussex County Historical Society was established in 1904, following the culmination of the county’s 150th anniversary celebration. The society brings together people interested in the prehistory, history, and native culture of Sussex County. They seek out, collect, preserve, restore, and study materials that reveal and illustrate the county’s history.
