Andover Township Day
Andover - The township recreation department promises “something for everyone” at Andover Township Day, Saturday May 19, noon to 6 p.m. at Hillside Park and Hall. “Andover Day has been going on for many years. We purposely plan it for every other year because people are more excited about it that way,” said Jackie Huelbig, recreation director. Prior to the official start, a 5K “Fun Run/Walk” will start at Hillside Park. The course traverses Goodale Road and ends back at the park. It starts at 10 a.m. Pre-registration is required and forms can be obtained at town hall. A children’s parade will start at Long Pond School at 11 a.m. and end at the park about noon. Children may decorate their bikes and make banners to carry for their favorite club or group. Police, rescue and youth organizations will participate. Mayor Tom Walsh and the Andover Township Committee will open the ceremonies at noon with the assistance of scout groups for a flag raising. The Little Miss and Mr. Andover Township contest will begin at 1 p.m. Contestants must be between 3 and 6-years-old. Information for parents is in the spring newsletter at www.andovertwp.org . The Sussex-Warren Arts Foundation talent search begins at 2 p.m. Township residents of all ages may compete. Day-long activities include: pony rides and petting zoo, dunking booth, a slide and mini-race track. For the less adventurous are face painting, nail painting and hair wrapping. A variety of local businesses will present demonstrations such as karate, dance and gymnastics. The senior citizens will hold a cake and white elephant sale. Along with several public service booths, there will be arts and crafts and gardening tables. The Andover Police will offer child safety seat inspections and finger printing at the police station adjacent to the park. The Soundbytes will play and refreshments include pop corn, cotton candy, funnel cakes and ice cream. The fire department will grill hot dogs and burgers. Proceeds from the sale of food are directed to the Kinney Trust Fund, benefiting the children of recently deceased township police sergeant Harry S. Kinney III. “We are asking area merchants and businesses to help the recreation committee by making a donation to the Andover Township Day Fund. In return, we are happy to advertise their business the day of the event,” said Huelig. Details for all activities can be found on the township’s website www.andovertwp.org or by calling 973-383-4280. The rain date is Sunday, May 20.
