Arts Council offers poetry workshop

NEWTON-The Sussex County Arts & Heritage Council will present a poetry workshop from 3-5:30 p.m. that will begin Sunday, Oct. 31 and run for six consecutive Sundays. The workshop will be hosted by the Arts Center at 9 Moran St., Newton. The workshop is dedicated to "a close, careful, full, and sympathetic reading" of each and every poem. Participants should bring their poems in progress. Instructor Robert Carnevale's poems have appeared in The Paris Review, The New Yorker, and other magazines and anthologies. In the 1980s he was Principal Literary Researcher for the Voices & Visions film series on American poetry, and co-wrote and edited the college telecourse based on the series. In the 1990s he served as Assistant Coordinator of the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation Poetry Program and helped to mount several of its poetry festivals. A two-time winner of fellowships in poetry from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts, he has read and taught, judged competitions, and organized events at many schools and literary venues in the Northeast. He is currently teaching writing and leads poetry groups for Drew University, the Dodge Foundation Poetry Program, Playwrights Theatre, and The New Jersey Writers Project.
