Arts council to host 19th annual Skylands art show and sale

Sussex county - The Sussex County Arts & Heritage Council will host its 19th Annual Skylands Juried Art Show and Sale from June 23 through July 29. This year’s show will showcase some the best art in New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania, with some entries from artists as far away as California and Wyoming. Three accomplished artists will jury the competition, selecting from more than 100 applicants. Edwin Havas is a Professor of Art Emeritus at Seton Hall University and an award- winning watercolorist. Valeri Larko is a painter and Director of the Tomasulo Gallery at Union City College and James Gwynne is a painter, professor, and co-dirctor of Contemporary Art at the Mill in Lafayette. “This year we had 117 entries for Skylands Juried Art Show and Sale and we were very pleased with the results as the work we received was by very accomplished artists in a variety of mediums,” said Linda Hirsch, arts coordinator. “This is also the first year that we opened up the competition nationally,” she added Sussex County artist Jennie Traill-Schaeffer has three pieces on display in the show. Traill-Schaeffer is an emerging artist who has exhibited in the NYC metro area. She also owns TraillWorks Painting and Design Studio in Newton. Roz Hollander is another local favorite artist. Hollander is a pastel artist who has won many awards nationally and exhibits monthly at the arts council’s regular exhibitions. Jack Hornstra, winner of The Edward Fairbanks Memorial Award in the 2005 Skylands Show and one of the winners of the Sprint 2005 Cover Photo Contest, is also exhibiting, as is Eileen Stanbridge a photographer from Vernon whose work frequently appears in The Advertiser-News. An opening champagne reception will be held from 7 to 10 p.m. on June 23, with awards presented at 8. Moran Street off Spring Street in Newton where the gallery is located will be closed to all traffic on the night of the reception and several tents will be set up in front of the gallery.
