Christ Church Evensong

| 23 May 2019 | 08:50

Christ Episcopal Church in Newton will celebrate Ascension Day with a special Evensong at 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 30. Ascension Day is traditionally celebrated on the 40th day after Easter and commemorates the bodily ascension of Jesus into heaven. Evensong is a choral version of the Evening Prayer liturgy used in the Anglican tradition which is usually offered in the late afternoon or evening. The renowned Christ Church Senior Choir will sing under the direction of Music Director Joe Mello. Selected works will include Preces and Responses by Michael Gibson, Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis in Bb by C. V. Stanford, and O Clap Your Hands by Ralph Vaughan Williams. The congregation will be invited to join in the singing of hymns including Hail the Day that Sees Him Rise, The Head that Once was Crowned with Thorns, and The Day thou Gavest, Lord, is Ended. The service will use the 1662 version of the Book of Common Prayer as a nod to the parish’s yearlong celebration of its 250th anniversary. The event is free and open to the public, although a free will offering will be taken. Christ Church is located at 62 Main Street in Newton.
