Newton — The Center for Prevention and Counseling will host a community meeting to discuss the issue of addiction, as presented in the recent documentary on HBO, Addiction. The meeting, organized in response to a call to action by the Surgeon General to combat underage drinking, will be held form 7 to 8 p.m. on Monday, April 30, in the Freeholders Conference Room at the County Administrative Center, 1 Spring St., Newton. A special screening of the Addiction film will be held and various speakers will discuss the issue of alcohol use by youth in Sussex County. The evening’s events will be hosted by Sussex County Freeholder Steve Oroho. “The meeting presents a great opportunity for the community at large to discuss their concerns and offer suggestions on how to overcome the impact of addiction on our lives in Sussex County,” says Barbara Adolphe, executive director of the Center for Prevention and Counseling. The meeting represents a broader campaign, highlighting April as Alcohol Awareness Month, fostered by the Center for Prevention and Counseling to draw attention to the fact that addiction is a wide ranging epidemic. More than 23 million Americans are battling addiction, but only about 10 percent are getting treatment. The secretive nature of substance abuse, combined with the false tendency to associate addiction with moral failure is a reason to have open discussion about this problem. Being part of the solution requires getting involved. RSVP for the meeting by calling the Center for Prevention and Counseling at 973-383-4787.
