Dixie Devils to perform July 13

Newton - The Dixie Devils will bring their lively style of Dixieland music to Sussex County Community College’s “Thursdays on the Green” series at 6:45 p.m. on July 13. The performance will take place rain or shine at the Connor Green, located on the college campus at One College Hill Rd. in Newton. The evening of music is free and the public is invited to attend. Guests may bring their own blankets or chairs to the performance. The Dixie Devils have entertained audiences throughout the tri-state area. The seven-piece band consists of trumpet, clarinet, soprano sax, tenor sax, trombone, drums, banjo and tuba. The group performs high-energy music from the “Roaring ‘20s” that appeals to all ages. Guests at “Thursdays on the Green” that evening will also have the opportunity to bid farewell to Dr. Bradley Gottfried, outgoing president of Sussex County Community College. Beginning at 6 p.m., the community is invited to join the college community for cake and punch in honor of Gottfried, who is leaving Aug. 1 to become president of the College of Southern Maryland. The three remaining “Thursdays on the Green” performances are: July 20 - Conjunto Imagen (Salsa music) July 27 - The Dirdy Birdies Jug Band Aug. 16 - Trio Globo (Contemporary acoustic jazz) All performances begin at 6:45 p.m. with the exception of Aug. 16, which will start at 6 p.m. for a special commemoration of the 25th anniversary of the “Thursdays on the Green” concert series. Refreshments are available for purchase, with proceeds from concession sales benefiting scholarships at the college.
