Family Fun Festival on Saturday to feature pumpkin contest

SPARTA - The kids are back at school, and with a hint of Autumn chill in the air, families may be looking around for a fun day out. Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church is holding a Family Fun Festival on Saturday, Sept. 30, featuring the 3rd Annual Pumpkin Decorating contest. The day-long Fall festival -- to be held on the Sparta church’s grounds -- will also offer games, food, music, children’s crafts, pony rides, a Moon bounce and cake walk. “Chez Shepherd,” the festival’s food attraction, will offer barbecue fare, including jalapeno cheddar hot dogs, as well as homemade soups, chilies and desserts. Decorated or carved pumpkins for the Pumpkin Decorating contest must be registered by 11:30 a.m. on the day of the event, with judging at 1 p.m. Children ranging from toddlers to age 12 may either bring a pumpkin, or decorate one at the crafts table. Awards will be given by age group for the funniest, scariest and prettiest pumpkin. The Family Fun Festival takes place rain or shine, at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, 246 Woodport Road (Route 181) in Sparta. Hours are 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. For information call 973-729-7010.
