Historical society to hold quilt airing this Sunday, Sept. 10

Vernon - The Vernon Township Historical Society will sponsor a Quilt Airing from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 10, at the Apple Valley Inn at 967 Route 517 in Vernon. At the airing, many local and handmade family heirloom quilts will be on display. Quilt Airings are traditions in rural settings. Housewives would drape their quilts from their clotheslines or front porches as part of their spring cleaning. It also gave women a chance to show off their quilt making skills. Family quilts played an important part in the historic fiber of America and quilt airings continue to be very common and colorful event in more rural parts of the country. The day’s activities will include a Civil War re-enactment by the 27th Regiment N.J. Vols. Co. F, a member of the N.J. Civil War Living History Association. On Sunday, Company F will be holding the final day of a three-day living history weekend from Sept. 8-10. The Civil War re-enactment will include military and civilian camps, sutlers, a wet plate/tintype photographer, a memorial service, and skirmishes. Their events on Sunday will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Pochuck Valley Farm, the Apple Valley Inn, and the Glenwood Grist Mill, all at the Route 517/565 intersection area.
