Jazz at the library

    WEST MILFORD — Bob Butts will present a program called Hot and Swinging: Jazz 1920-1945 at the West Milford Township Library on Monday, June 24, from 7 to 8 p.m. The range of the program is from the small combo dixieland-based bands of Louis Armstrong and company to the swing bands of Duke Ellington, Glenn Miller and Benny Goodman and from the songs of Fats Waller and Jelly Roll Morton to the songs of George Gershwin and Richard Rodgers. Butts studied conducting at Julliard and the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto. He received his musicological training from Montclair State College and the University of Iowa. He taught conducting and music history courses at Montclair State College, Drew University and the County College of Morris. Currently he serves as the conductor of the Baroque Orchestra of New Jersey, the Little Opera Company, and the Lakeland Youth Symphony Senior Orchestra. Since 1999, Butts has been a regular guest conductor with orchestras and opera companies in Romania and Russia. In 2004 he was named Arts Professional of the Year by the Arts Council of Morris County. The program will be held on the back lawn of the library. Bring a chair and a friend. In case of rain the program will be held in town hall.
