Jazz quartet back for second year

WARWICK They’re back. Dick Wells and the Philip Jones Jazz Quartet plan to wow the audience again on Thursday evening, Oct. 5, in the Café at the Warwick Valley Winery, 114 Little York Road. Last year, two sold-out performances, then held at Warwick’s Landmark Inn, earned standing ovations. Philip Jones, recording artist, well-known tenor and bass trombonist, is a 17-year veteran of the Grammy-winning “Danny Davis and the Nashville Brass” orchestra. As a performer, Jones has worked with many of the most talented entertainers in show business, including Bing Crosby, Elves Presley, Ray Charles, Dolly Parton, Linda Ronstadt and Willie Nelson as well as dozens of famous groups and orchestras. And as a studio musician he also has recorded on hundreds of top label releases. Wells is best known locally for his morning news and Saturday music radio shows on WTBQ (1110 AM) and for his appearances on cable television and at community events. But his true claim to fame is as a professional singer and entertainer. Wells once sang with the world-famous Harry James orchestra and even appeared on the Johnny Carson Tonight Show. He also has performed on Las Vegas stages with legendary entertainers like Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis Jr. He’s been working with Jones for about six years and the award-winning trombonist appears on Wells’ popular CD, “Here’s to the Band.” Pané Bakery Café co-owner/chef Michael Dimartino, who also owns the Landmark Inn, has been looking forward to the Quartet’s third return engagement. Both he and Wells felt the raised stage and café environment at the Warwick Valley Winery would help make the cabaret-style show better than ever. The Pané Bakery Café is co-owned by Katherine Grizzanti. “It’s just like a nightclub,” Wells said. “The audience will love it.” On Oct. 5 the Café will be open for full course dinner selections beginning at 5:30 p.m. The performance starts at 8:30 p.m. and there is a $12 cover charge.
