Katzenberg and Klein perform oboe and piano duet

Newton - Sussex County Community College is pleased to present an oboe and piano duet with Frederick Katzenberg and Gary Klein at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 18. Katzenberg and Klein will perform selections from Bach, Chopin, Falla, and Poulenc, featuring the warm Schumann Three Romances, the dramatic Handel G Minor Oboe Concerto, the Kalliwoda Morceau de Salon, and the richly varied Falla Seven Spanish Folk-Songs. The performance will take place in the Sussex Bank Theater at SCCC. Admission for this performance is $5. Katzenberg’s many performances throughout the tri-state area have included the New York and New Jersey premieres of Walter Skolnik’s “Oboe Sonatina,” solo performances on New York radio stations WQXR and WFUV, and recitals at Lincoln Center Library, St. Bartholomew’s Church, and New York University. He was the soloist in the premiere of a Michael Ward work at Third St. Music School and in the premieres of several David Clancy works at Marymount Theatre. Before focusing on his solo career, Katzenberg co-founded Time’s Trio and the Lexington Woodwind Quintet, and was a member of the Westchester (NY) Symphony Orchestra. He also founded the Katzenberg Classical Trio. A g Carmeci presents “The Impotent Bystander” raduate of Mannes College of Music, he has also studied at McGill University and l’Ecole Normale de Musique de Paris. He has studied oboe with Lois Wann, Dale Hunter, and Lucien Debray. Klein began his piano studies at the age of seven, made his debut with the Cheyenne Symphony Orchestra at the age of 14, and was named first-prize winner of the prestigious Marie Morrisey Keith Young Artists’ Competition at the age of 17. In 1972, as a scholarship student, he enrolled at Mannes College of Music where he studied with Australian pianist and recording artist Bruce Hungerford. He continued his studies at State University of New York at Purchase, graduating in 1978. Since making his debut at Carnegie Recital Hall in 1981, he has performed in numerous concerts throughout the tri-state area, including the world premieres of works by William Schimmel and Dary John Mizelle at Symphony Space in New York City.
