Learn about local raptors
Vernon Falcons, hawks, eagles and owls inhabit the Wallkill River National Wildlife Refuge during the winter and humans can get a glimpse of some of them on Friday, Dec. 30, at a program that will highlight the species found here. The indoor presentation with live birds from the Avian Wildlife Center begins at 2 p.m. at the Refuge Headquarters, 1547 County Route 565 in Vernon. Following that, Ken Witkowski will lead a walk along the Liberty Loop Trail. Participants can drive to the trail to look for several species of hawks, short-eared owls and maybe a bald eagle. Bring binoculars and dress warmly for the outdoor portion. Loaner binoculars are available from the Friends of Wallkill River National Wildlife Refuge for those who need. This program is sponsored by the Friends group. There is no charge for members. For non-members there is a suggested donation of $2 per person or $5 per family. For additional information contact the Avian Wildlife Center at 973-702-1957 or Ken Witkowski at 973-702-7266 ext. 14. The Friends of Wallkill River National Wildlife Refuge support the mission of the refuge and offer public programs throughout the year. Through a grant from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation in 2011 they were able to purchase the binoculars to loan out during this program and future programs.
