Library presents American heritage in music

    American Treasures, featuring solo classical guitarist Phillip Lester, will be presented from 1 to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 21 at the Main Library at 125 Morris Turnpike in Newton. American Treasures is a musical journey through the first two hundred years of the development the United States. With instrumental guitar renditions and historical anecdotes, Lester presents America’s heritage and history through a lively blend of music and commentary. Popular colonial songs, political songs of revolution, pioneer ballads, frontier classics, spirituals, sea shanty’s, songs of the Civil War, along with the popular tunes of Stephen Foster, are all presented within their historical context. Through music and stories, he effectively helps audiences, young and old, remember the spirit behind America’s birth, struggle, for independence, and devotion of its founding fathers and pioneers.
