Neil Simon comedy coming to country club
SPARTA “The Last of the Red Hot Lovers,” a Neil Simon comedy that will audiences back to the sexual revolution of the 1970s, will be performed by the Cornerstone Playhouse in October. Middle-aged restaurateur Barney Cashman (Paul Tracey of Byram) at the age of 62 wants to join the revolution before it’s too late. But Barney is a gentle, sober soul with a true-blue wife of 25 years and absolutely no experience in adultery. Even so, he begins to feel the desire to roam. He realizes that one day each week, his mother’s apartment will be empty all afternoon. Between December and August, he makes three pathetic attempts at seduction, only to learn that it is much more complicated and difficult than he could have imagined. First he tries with Elaine Navazzio (Donna Lee Amerman of Augusta), a flaunting sexpot who likes cigarettes, whisky and husbands...other than her own. Barney is not properly set up for such compulsions, especially in his mother’s apartment, so he flunks the course. But he’s got a better idea: a kooky actress. But Bobbi Michele (Amanda Honick of Stanhope) turns madder than a hatter. So that leaves him eventually with his wife’s friend Jeanette Fisher (Trudie Lehman of Ogdensburg). Unfortunately she is a sternly driven moralist who sees sin around every bend. Linda Brady, with the assistance of Anne C. Wheeler, both of Sparta, will direct the play. The show will be presented at The Lake Mohawk Country Club on Oct. 19, 20, 21, and 22. Curtain is at 8 p.m., with the Sunday matinee at 2 p.m. There is cabaret seating and a cash bar. Tickets are $12, $11 for students, senior citizens and members. Call for reservations at 973-729-2120.
