Public library offering new, exciting displays
Sussex County The Sussex-Wantage Branch of the Sussex County Library System is currently hosting a display that is sure to make patrons and visitors want to look up at the night sky. Al Carcich and Frame Works of Sussex present “Wantage Skies- Imaging our Nighttime Sky,” including images of the October 2003 and November 2005 Aurora Borealis, numerous galaxies, the moon and various nebulae seen in the Wantage sky. There are also close-ups of the moon, revealing countless craters formed by asteroid and comet impacts over the last 4 billion years. All of the pictures, including those of objects up to 50 million light years away, were taken by Carcich in his private observatory and will be on display through mid-June. Also, The Friends of the Sussex-Wantage Library’s historical display case is presently showcasing the history of the Wantage School which will be celebrating their 70th year (1938-2008). The Wantage School was constructed as part of the WPA program in 1937. All of the local one-room schools were consolidated into the new building, which featured indoor bathrooms with running water, a central heating system and a modern cafeteria. Various memorabilia, consisting of photographs, school programs and yearbooks, will be on display until June 1. The library is also featuring a Memorial Day display of the service records of Adrian K. Compa, a pilot who served in the 8th Air Force, 351st Bombardment Group in World War II. Compa received the Air Medal with six Oak Leaf Clusters and the European-African-Middle Eastern Theatre Campaign Ribbon with a Bronze Star, during his tour of duty. Included in the display are his service records, medals and various souvenirs he collected while stationed overseas. Compa’s nephew, Peter Compa of Wantage, has loaned these items to the library for display through June 8.
