Retrospective on John Fleming Gould
Sugar Loaf The exhibit “Journey Through Seventy Years of Art,” featuring the art work of John Fleming Gould (1906-1996) is now on display at the Lycian Centre in Sugar Loaf. This exhibition of the Bethlehem Art Gallery will include original paintings and prints of Gould’s mid-1950s American Red Cross posters. The exhibit was organized by Gould’s son, Robert, to celebrate his father’s centennial year. John Fleming Gould was a prominent advertising artist, one of country’s best known illustrators, and a distinguished teacher at Pratt Institute for 20 years. But he was first and foremost a gallery artist. He captured elements of the Hudson Valley’s history and beauty on paper and canvas in a career that spanned more than 70 years. The exhibit features oils, acrylics, pen and ink, and other mediums, and includes images of the Newburgh-Beacon Ferry, Eagles Over West Point, Glen Curtiss’s Albany Flyer, and other examples of the country’s architectural and historical past. Illustrations from stories that appeared in the Saturday Evening Post, Redbook, and Outdoor Life are also included. There will be a special wall display of General Electric School and college posters from the 1960s. The exhibit will be on display through Dec. 31. For more information, call 469-2287.
