The Sparta chapter of UNICO, the largest Italian-American Service Club in the United States, is holding a membership drive during January. The chapter will meet 7 p.m., Jan. 19, at the Sparta Ambulance Building Membership is exclusively Americans of Italian heritage, or persons married to those of Italian heritage. UNICO funds scholarships to students throughout Sussex County and participates in charities, and community and civic activities. UNICO translated from Italian, means "One or Only." The letters are interpreted as U-Unity; N-Neighborliness, I-Integrity, C-Charity, and O-Opportunity. The UNICO motto of "Service Above Self" exemplifies the desire to develop better understanding and respect for each other and for Italian-Americans as a whole. Members give their time and support in the pursuit doing things for others and developing a better citizenship by community activity.
