Shakespeare at the Library
Oak Ridge n Summer and Shakespeare n perfect together. On Tuesday, July 17 at 7 p.m., the NextStage Ensemble performs Shakespeare’s Henry IV, Part I at the Jefferson Township Public Library, 1031 Weldon Road, Oak Ridge. Shakespeare’s first claim to fame as a playwright was his ability to transform English history into a thrilling narrative, which is clearly displayed in this 1596 masterpiece. King Henry IV’s uneasy hold on power is challenged by the fiery Harry Hotspur and his allies, even as the king’s eldest son, Prince Hal, is gaining a notorious reputation on the London streets. The play that introduced the world to the cynical “fat knight,” Sir John Falstaff, is also a gripping tale of valor and ambition. The NextStage Ensemble is the touring group of the Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey, one of the leading Shakespeare theatres in the nation. The approximate running time of the performance is one hour, and it is recommended for ages 12 and up. Free and open to the public. No registration necessary.
