Sparta Books to host signing
SPARTA-Ernestine Martin will sign her book, Saturday's Child, and greet and chat with area residents from 1-3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 9. Just months before the 1929 crash of the stock market, Saturday's Child came into the world. In her autobiography, Martin recalls growing up in Morristown in the 1930s and 1940s and her life at Knollcroft, the comfortable home of her successful businessman father who bred champion English Setters. Contrasting that lifestyle were the summers spent in Craven and Pamlico counties of North Carolina, where her mother's family led a life of unending hardships. Saturday's Child, as the traditional rhyme states "works hard for its living" and Martin did work hard at life, balancing family lifestyles, distressed as the surrogate for the son her father never had, enduring the wrath of a histrionic mother and eventually marrying a man who had a dark side. Ultimately, Martin's spirit triumphs. Martin is a Morris Plains, resident and also the author of My Times In The Army 1943-1946 as told by Frank Martin. The book is in the Library of Congress. Sparta Books is supportive of local authors and welcomes inquiries from area authors. Sparta Books is located at 41 Theatre Center (Route 181) in Sparta.
