Sparta sisters named ambassadors
SPARTA-Matlin and Delaney Xenakis are making history as the first sister team to be named by Special Olympics New Jersey as ambassadors for the American Girl Fashion Shows. The two scheduled fashion shows will be held on Sunday, Oct. 23, at the Westin in Princeton. The day-long event is expected to draw hundreds of young girls from the area. Both girls will be in pink, their favorite color, when they light up the runway, dressed in fashions to match their dolls' attire. The Sparta sisters will share their love of history and fashion, as they serve on the fashion show committee and raise money and awareness for Special Olympics New Jersey. Ten-year-old Matlin, who's favorite American Girl doll is the resourceful Kit Kittredge, said that she's learned "respect and hope" from reading about the historic "life and times" of her favorite doll, whose story is set during the depression. Eight-year-old Delaney stated that the ever-hopeful Josephina Montoya is her favorite historical doll, and that the doll's story of loss and renewal has taught her lessons in caring for others. Event participants can enjoy light refreshments while they view the newest fashions to "twin" their favorite doll's. A Special Olympics New Jersey athlete will be on hand to greet guests, and talk about the many ways athletes will bene?t from the proceeds of the event. Modeling opportunities are still available for girls ages six through 12, through a random drawing to be held in the month of September. From Sept. 1 to Sept. 30, interested models may enter their names in the drawing at the Long Motor Group of Volvo dealerships in Princeton, Bridgewater and Edison, or online at www.thegifthouse.net. Tickets to attend the fashion shows can be obtained by contacting Special Olympics New Jersey at 609-896-8000.
