West Milford — On Sunday, Oct. 23 around noontime, pause a minute and listen carefully. If you live anywhere near St. Joseph Church on Germantown Road you may hear the resounding music of the Straight & Narrow Gospel Choir as they sing praise with such a joyful spirit that it engulfs all within ear-shot. According to Sister Janet Brisky, PBVM, Pastoral Associate at Saint Joseph’s and a Straight & Narrow board member, all are welcome to join the parishioners and clergy at the noon Mass in the Parish Center to experience the talent of this faith-filled choir. Straight & Narrow, located in Paterson, is a non-profit Catholic Charities social service organization. It provides residential and outpatient substance abuse treatment, detoxification, childcare, family services, and care for those with HIV. The services are available for the local community as well as residents of all New Jersey counties. Straight & Narrow serves 1500 individuals on a daily basis. With a staff of 300, including physicians, psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, teachers, nurses and counselors, the organization’s core belief is in the dignity of every person and its mission is to help and foster hope. John Sullivan, a St. Joseph’s parishioner and board member of Straight & Narrow, said he is always inspired by the Gospel Choir. “They have faced challenges, they have reached rock bottom. Their faith, their spiritual side has been their salvation. Their joy is contagious,” Sullivan said. Foot-tapping music that makes you want to get out of your seat awaits. The choir’s joy is worth catching.
