Sussex College announces spring courses

Understanding Financial Statements Learning about financial statements can improve the bottom line of a business. This workshop covers various types of financial statements in order to allow for further review and analysis of business operations and enhance the ability to design a profit improvement planning strategy. Topics include: understanding spreadsheets, revenue and expenses, structure and relationships, meaningful forecasts and projections, break-even analysis, balance sheets, and learning how to manage trends undermining your business and more. This single session, three-hour workshop costs $35 and will be held Thursday, April 19 from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. It will be taught Joseph L. Rosenberg, CPA. Love to Fish? Try Fly Fishing! Spring is the perfect time to learn the fundamentals of fly fishing. Whether It’s stream fishing for trout or fishing a lake for bass or pan fish or even trying your luck in salt water, angling with flies is very productive and lots of fun. The fundamentals of fly fishing are easy to understand. The fly fisher can then make this hobby as complex or simple as they desire. The first session will cover all the basics: equipment selection, what flies to use and when to fish them, insect identification as well as fly casting. The second session will be held at the Pequest Trout Hatchery. The students will need a fly rod, reel, line, plus a few flies to help them master the elements of this popular past time. Bring any equipment you now have to class; a limited amount of gear is available for those who need it. This two--session course is 7.5 hours long and begins on Saturday, April 21 from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The second session will be held on Saturday, April 28 from 9 a.m. to noon at Pequest Trout Hatchery. The cost is $69 and your instructor is Jim Flatley. An Overview of Asperger Syndrome Asperger Syndrome is a pervasive developmental disorder on the higher functioning end of the autism spectrum. As it has become well known, teachers and other school personnel, including school nurses, are struggling to successfully work with these children in the classroom and other school settings. This session covers the definition of Asperger Syndrome, its characteristics, the way it manifests itself in the school setting and suggestions for working with children with Asperger Syndrome in the classroom. Instructor Janice Lemmo has been the chapter coordinator for the NW New Jersey Chapter of ASPEN for 5 years and is the parent of a 16 year old son with Asperger Syndrome. Additionally, she is a seventh grade social studies teacher in Passaic. This single session three-hour workshop will be held Monday, April 23 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and costs $39. Food Safety for Food Handlers Certificate Program 2 additional dates added! Due to demand, the college has added two additional sessions: Monday, April 16 and Monday, May 14. Both run from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. and cost $29. Instructor Peter Bilby, B.S., M.S., and a registered Environmental Health Specialist with more than 30 years experience in both the public and private sectors will conduct both sessions. Presented in conjunction with the Sussex County Division of Health and Human Services, this course will provide attendees with the necessary skills required to safely handle consumables. Topics will include a review of as hazards, personal hygiene, equipment sanitization and pest control. This course satisfies the Food Handlers Sanitation Training as required by the Sussex County Division of Health.
